Minnow’s cashmere launch: lessons for swimwear range planning

Minnow is adding cashmere to a business still led by swimwear. WWD’s September 15, 2026 report describes a family resort brand extending its assortment after growth in its women’s business. For swimwear buyers, this is a case study in deciding which adjacent products deserve development budget. It does not establish a market-wide shift toward cashmere.

What the report establishes

According to WWD, Minnow’s women’s business represents about 45 percent of sales, and its women’s program grew 114 percent year over year. Swimwear remains its largest product category. Founder Morgan Smith also told the publication that repeat customers generate 70 percent of revenue and eight in ten website orders sell at full price. The cashmere launch spans retail prices of $148 to $372.

These are company-specific figures reported in an interview. The article does not disclose total revenue, product-level margins or the cashmere launch’s subsequent sales. Women’s program growth is not a reported growth rate for women’s swimwear alone. Buyers should keep those distinctions in any internal presentation.

Use demand evidence to choose the next category

Our planning recommendation is to examine where existing swimwear customers already ask for another product. A request for a coordinating cover-up is different from interest in a sweater for a separate trip. Record the use occasion, expected price and preferred fit before treating either request as a purchase commitment.

A brand can compare customer requests with its own repeat-purchase records, returns and full-price sales by category. Look for a recurring need that the current range does not meet. A small capsule may be a reasonable test when that evidence is consistent; an attractive competitor launch alone is a weak basis for a purchase order.

For a coordinated family capsule, decide which visual elements should carry across sizes and which should change. Review the swimwear color and print guide while preparing the brief. Shared colors can connect different silhouettes, but print scale and placement still need review on each garment size. This is a development recommendation, not a claim that coordination caused Minnow’s repeat revenue.

Keep the inventory test measurable

WWD describes Minnow’s deliberately low inventory and selective assortment expansion. The report does not provide order quantities, replenishment lead times or evidence that low inventory caused its full-price results. Those gaps matter when translating the story into a buying plan.

Before ordering an adjacent category, set an initial stock budget and a review date. Track full-price sell-through, returns and contribution after delivery costs separately from the established swim range. Define what would justify a reorder and what would stop further purchasing. A test with strong sales but frequent fit returns may need a product correction before expansion.

Discuss reorder feasibility with suppliers before committing to a launch calendar. Fabric availability, minimum quantities and production timing must come from the actual supplier quotation. Do not assume that a small opening order guarantees economical or fast replenishment.

Separate assortment ideas from material approval

Cashmere in this report is an apparel extension. It is not presented as a swimwear material or as having been tested for swimming. Adding a travel layer to a collection does not justify changing the performance requirements of the swimsuit sold alongside it.

Keep separate specifications for swim garments and dry-use layers. For the swim portion, use the swimwear fabric guide as a starting point for supplier discussions, then require evidence for the intended use. Stretch recovery, colorfastness and lining behavior need assessment on the chosen fabric and construction; a lifestyle image cannot establish them.

The report identifies India and Vietnam as Minnow’s swimwear production origins. It does not disclose supplier names, certifications, production costs or comparative quality results. That information can inform a sourcing map, but it cannot support a country ranking or a factory-switch decision.

Turn the idea into a sample brief

Write a brief that names the target customer, travel occasion, proposed styles and the evidence behind the assortment choice. Include the swim products that must remain available if the adjacent capsule underperforms. Give the supplier an explicit list of fit and visual checks instead of asking for a general resort look.

Use swimwear sampling to review the proposed swim styles before bulk approval. Compare samples against the brief and record revisions by style and size. Any adjacent knitwear needs its own appropriate supplier review and testing. The buying decision should follow those results and the brand’s customer evidence.
